Because the Internet was crying out for one more opinion...
Starting a Substack just as it's probably no longer cool to do so.
Welcome to ‘As If It Matters…’
Apparently I’m just self-important enough to think people might read something I post on the Internet, but I’m *also* just self-aware enough to know that I have no business charging anyone to read anything I’ve written. So, by all means roll your eyes, but it won’t cost you anything.
I’ve come to admit that I’m a slow adopter of new things, particularly anything related to, or even tangential to, technology. For example, I recently carried around a new set of AirPods that were gifted to me months ago, continuing to use my corded set until finally I overcame my inexplicable resistance and simply opened the little white case, stuck those bad-boys in my ears, and stepped into the future that, for a lot of people, started about five years ago.
This feels similar. If it was ever cool to start a Substack, that was probably at least a year ago. So, that’s why I’m starting one now.
There’s a store (if you can call it that) between downtown Charleston, SC and Sullivan’s Island that from the street looks more or less like a junkyard, but a junkyard only for lawn sculptures. Think gorillas, Jesuses (baby Jesus and grown-up Jesus), and of course, Clemson Tigers. If I had to guess, I would bet that this store has been there since ~forever. I once stopped in to see what goes on in a place like this and met the ‘owner’, a middle-aged man with a bleach blond bowl-cut, wearing denim cut-offs.
The first thing this man told me was that ‘he has some thoughts’. I think about him often because, I guess, admittedly I too ‘have some thoughts’. On some level, this proves that we all have something in common with just about everyone. And that’s pretty much what this will be: some thoughts.
If this year hasn’t made you question why things are the way they are or why we do the things we do, then you must know something I don’t. For everyone else, I hope someone might find any one of these not-yet-shared thoughts useful at some point.
